Bhairav Kunda Emerging as a Tourist Favorite
Chautara: The Bhairav Kunda area, located in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchowk, has witnessed a steady rise in tourist arrivals in recent years. Revered as a sacred site by both Hindus and Buddhists, the lake is worshipped by the Sherpa community as Aama Chyumen.
Situated at an altitude of 4,124 meters above sea level, at the base of Furbi Ghyachu Bhanjyang (6,567 meters), the lake covers an area of approximately 84,193 square meters. According to Rural Municipality Chairperson Pasang Norbu Sherpa, the depth of the lake has yet to be measured. The pristine waters of the lake, along with a nearby 198-meter-high waterfall, enhance the natural appeal of the area.
Tourists are drawn to the region’s scenic beauty, with the Jugal Himal visible across from the lake. Although the trek to Bhairav Kunda is challenging, visitors often describe the journey as rewarding. The site can be reached within one-and-a-half to two days on foot via a steep trail from Tatopani Larcha along the Araniko Highway.
The area becomes especially crowded during Janai Purnima, when large numbers of pilgrims gather for religious observances. Nearby lies the historic Dugunagadhi Fort, believed to have been constructed during the reign of Jung Bahadur Rana for strategic defense.
Alternative trekking routes to Bhairav Kunda pass through Daklang, Kanglang, and Listi via the Ugrachandi Bhagwati Temple, as well as through Chagam, Bagam, and Chakoramkor, according to local resident Bina Rokka Adhikari. Mythology associates the lake with Lord Shiva and Parvati, with Bhairav (Shiva’s fierce manifestation) believed to reside here. A major fair is held at the lake during Janai Purnima.
Another nearby attraction is Deudhunga, located about 45 kilometers from Chaku along the Kodari road. Thousands of devotees visit both Bhairav Kunda and Deudhunga annually, driven by the belief that wishes made here are fulfilled.
The region attracts not only domestic pilgrims but also international tourists from countries such as China, India, and various Western nations. Prior to the 2015 Nepal earthquake, around 1,000 foreign tourists visited Dugunagadhi Fort and Bhairav Kunda each year. Visitors are also captivated by panoramic views extending into Tibet and across Nepal’s Himalayan landscapes.
The area is rich in biodiversity and medicinal herbs, including Yarsagumba, Jatamasi, Chiraito, and Panchaunle. It is also home to rare wildlife such as snow leopards, bears, wolves, and wild boars.
Despite its growing popularity, the journey remains physically demanding, with limited infrastructure along the route. Travelers often rely on basic shelters during the trek. To address this, the rural municipality has proposed developing water facilities, shelters, and eventually road access to improve connectivity and visitor experience.
Local authorities believe that with proper management, infrastructure development, and promotion, Bhairav Kunda could significantly boost tourism and contribute to the economic development of Sindhupalchowk while gaining wider international recognition.
