7th National Climate Conference Calls for Action Beyond Policy
Lumbini, April 24: The 7th National Conference on climate change concluded in Lamahi with a strong call for translating policies into action, particularly at the community level.
Experts and scholars stressed the need for effective coordination among federal, provincial, and local governments to implement climate adaptation programmes and reduce climate risks. Speakers highlighted that local governments and communities must play a more active and empowered role in addressing climate challenges.
Held under the theme “Bridging Policy and Practice: Harmonizing Climate Governance,” the conference brought together government officials, policymakers, scholars, and development partners. Participants emphasized the urgency of narrowing the gap between climate policies and their on-ground implementation.
Inaugurating the event, Dev Karan Prasad Kalawar, Minister for Forest and Environment of Lumbini Province, underscored the importance of expanding community-level adaptation programmes to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Similarly, Dilliraj Aryal, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Planning Commission, noted that climate change is a cross-cutting issue. He pointed out that Nepal continues to face severe climate impacts despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions.
The conference concluded with a shared understanding that stronger coordination, inclusive governance, and practical implementation are key to building climate resilience in Nepal.
