Korean Team Makes First-Ever Ascent of Sat Peak in Kanchenjunga Region
Kathmandu, May 4: A three-member team from the Korean Alpine Federation has successfully climbed Sat Peak (6,220m) in eastern Nepal’s Kanchenjunga region, making the first recorded ascent of the mountain.
The team members: An Chi Young, Lee Euijoon and Baek Jongmin, reached the summit at 3:15 pm Nepali time on May 2. According to Sora Adventure Treks and Expedition, which managed the expedition, the climbers have now started descending after successfully completing the climb.
Sat Peak, located in the remote Janak Himal range of Taplejung district, had remained unclimbed despite previous attempts. The team followed a difficult route through Taplejung, Ghunsa, Lonak and Tshima Glacier before reaching Base Camp and the summit.
The climbers completed the expedition in alpine style without the support of Nepali climbing guides, relying on their own technical skills and preparation.
The expedition was officially flagged off in Kathmandu in April in the presence of Korean Ambassador Park Tae-Young, Director General of the Department of Tourism Ram Krishna Lamichhane and Nepal Mountaineering Association President Phur Gelje Sherpa.
Ngawa Nima Sherpa, Managing Director of Sora Adventure Treks and Expedition, described the ascent as a historic achievement for Nepal’s mountaineering sector. He said the successful climb opens new possibilities for exploration in the Himalayan region.
Officials also said the expedition would help promote adventure tourism and strengthen tourism ties between Nepal and South Korea.
The successful ascent of Sat Peak highlights Nepal’s untapped mountaineering potential, especially in remote regions like Kanchenjunga.
